Diversity Alliance Committee

Please see a message from the Superintendent regarding the creation of this new district committee.

One of the many reasons that I love the town of Hawthorne and have spent my life here is that in the face of a challenge or problem, this town always comes together to find a solution. Also, after 27 years in education, I strongly believe in and understand the importance of education and that in order to truly effect change, we must start with education.

As the Superintendent of the Hawthorne Public Schools, I can share that one of our on-going district goals is to advance the work of inclusivity and equity throughout the district. Which is why I am happy to share that beginning this July 2020, we are establishing a new district Diversity Alliance Committee. Our initial focus will be on how we can better educate ourselves, our students, and our community on the mutual benefits of all races, religions, and cultures accepting, respecting, and learning from one another.

Over the past couple of weeks, my administrative team and I have begun working on a framework to implement change in our district. We call this a framework because we do not believe it is best to develop this plan in isolation. We believe in order to develop a comprehensive plan that will benefit our students and staff across the district, it will require input from all stakeholders. Subsequently, we have already begun gathering input from our Educational community for suggestions and best practices. We have also begun reaching out to stakeholders to begin forming this new committee.

To date, this committee includes: Parents and community members, district administrators from each level, a member of the Hawthorne Police Department, former students and Board of Education Members. Also, once we return to school, we will be meeting and gathering input from current students in our schools.

We are excited about this new initiative and look forward to sharing the work of this committee as we collaborate to enhance our current curriculum, training and programming. At the end of the day our ultimate goal is to Build a Coalition to develop and adopt a model to implement change right here in Hawthorne.
Sincerely, Richard A. Spirito Superintendent of Schools
